Before launching Dorset Auto Restore Ltd, I took a journey with a well-known SMART repair franchise for quite some time. With our name in the spotlight and the supposed marketing magic of the franchise, breaking away felt like an unimaginable feat.
Life wasn't awful with them, but the relationship heavily favoured the franchisor. As our costs increased and our contract neared its end, I
thought,
"Why not shake things up?"
I was convinced that my customers were returning for ME, not just the brand, and I was tired of splurging on hefty fees for the privilege.
In the world of franchising, it's about grabbing a piece of our earnings—usually 10%—along with a variety of other fees.
Post-breakup, I had to navigate a legal obstacle course, despite assurances to the contrary. Now, on the other side, I can confidently say that I made the right call.
Full control over my marketing
Full control over my suppliers
Full control over where I trade
And no more parting with 10%+ in royalties, allowing me to invest further in my business and keeping my prices competitive for my customers.
I've even added other services like leather deep cleaning and repair to my skillset.
Don't get us wrong, being part of a franchise had its perks, but judging by the exodus over the years, I'm not the only one thinking this way.
Onward and upward—smooth sailing all the way! 🚀
